C. 28782 FRIDAY, MAR. 28, 1980 Price 10c Per Copy Weather Wednesday: high 63, low 43. Thursday was cloudy and about noon the sun popped out. Because of difficulty and discomfort, only one U. S. driver in nine used the safety belts in his auto, the Dept, of Transportation reported Wednesday. Wednesday night Spartanburg Ch. 7 TV news had a report of the Tryon students painting the fire hydrants on Trade St. under the direction of Mrs. Nan Parsons. The Tryon Riding & Hunt Club is furnishing the paint, the art students, Richard Rardin, chair man are doing the painting. The little riders have created lots of attention. The Democrats are having a fund raising dinner tonight at 7 o’clock at Polk Central High School. Tom Mallonee will be the guest speaker. There will be folk and square dancing tonight at 7:30 at the Pickin’ Parlor (4-H Center in Columbus) Saturday from 4 p.m. until? is the Ham and Chicken Supper at the Pea Ridge Club House. Sunday at 8 p.m. the Wofford College Glee Club and Ensemble will be at the Fine Arts Center. It is unbelieveable the amount of trash the Tryon High School Continued On Back Page Palm Sunday At Tryon Presbyterian The children will join the adult choir and sing Vaughan Wil liam’s “Hail Thee Festival Day” under the direction of Hans Vigeland Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John D. Smith will preach on "When Darkness Obscures.” Dr. Placak Is Landrum Speaker Dr. Joseph C. Placak will repeat his very popular movie and slide lecture on the Galapozos Islands for the “Landrum Friends of the Library” on Monday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the library. Dr. Placak has a long list of credits in Public Service as a former Polk County coroner and Medical Examiner. He was past president of the Tryon Fine Arts Center, former president of the Polk County Library Board, past chairman of the Board of Health for Polk, McDowell and Kuther- ford Counties. He was also, vice president of Polk County Histori cal Association and curator of its Museum. He served as commandor in the Navy, South Pacific during W.W.II. At Garrison Chapel There will be Candlelight Vesper Service Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Garrison Chapel Baptist Church. Democrats Have Mallonee As Speaker Tom Mallonee will be the guest speaker at the Democratic Fund Raising Dinner at 7 p.m. at Polk Central High School. Mr. Mallonee served as District Secretary for Congress man Roy A. Taylor for many years and then continued on as District Secretary for Congress man Lamar Gudger until he retired several years ago. He is on the Board of Trustees of Western Carolina University. Prior to joining Taylor’s Con gressional staff he was veterans service officer for Buncombe County. A graduate of Western CaroHna University, he also attended the U. S. Navy Academy and Ohio State University before serving with the Navy in World War II. He taught and coached at Valley Spring, Weaverville and Flat Creek after the war. Tar Heel Alumni CHAPEL HILL - Rollie Tillman, vice chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be the featured speaker at the Rutherford-Polk UNC Alumni Chapter dinner meeting Wednesday, April 9, in Rutherfordton. The meeting will be held on the Club House on Tryon Road in Rutherfordton and will include a 6:45 p.m. social and dinner at 7:15 p.m. Cost is $7.50 per person. Reservations may be made by contacting Jack R. Bruntley, Box Continued Un Back Hage Clean-Up Saturday At Roseland A clean up campaign of the Roseland Community will take place on Saturday, March 29, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Garrison Chapel Baptist Church. The clean up is in conjunction with "Operation Pride” and is being coordinated by the Mayor’s. Advisory Task Force, and assisted by the Town of Tryon. Residents of the community have’ been contacted to clean up their own property and to assist in clearing the roadsides of litter The Roseland 4-H Club will also participate.
